Ridgecrest Intermediate School ELD Program

Welcome Parents and Students!

About the ELD Program
The Ridgecrest Intermediate ELD (English Language Development) Program is a course of instruction for students who speak a language other than English as their first language. Teachers of English learners have received training that enables them to provide English learners with instruction that meets their needs. Teachers in Ridgecrest's ELD Program use strategies to make content accessible, while also providing students with opportunities to improve their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills in English.

In the RIS ELD Program, a student's English language proficiency level is initially determined through a variety of formal and informal assessments (ELPAC, Scholastic Reading Inventory, teacher assessment, etc.), and students are placed in the classes that best meet their needs according to grade level and English Language Proficiency level.

ELD Support

Course Description

ELD Support class emphasizes listening and speaking skills and includes reading and writing skills as proficiency levels improve. The overall objectives of the program are for students to develop English skills to enhance school success and to develop self-confidence when it comes to communication in English. A portion of the class is dedicated to students’ Language Arts homework assignments.

What is ELPAC?
ELPAC is an acronym that stands for English Language Performance Assessment of California. All English learners take this test to help schools determine their placement in an ELD Program. To see what the test looks like, click here: ELPAC Practice Test..
