PEP Summer School: STEM

Course Description

Hi everyone- Welcome to Mr. Woodward's PEP Summer School STEM Class.

I’ve been teaching in the PVPUSD for 21 years and specializing in STEM Instruction for the past 10 years.

I’m looking forward to introducing the students to a variety of STEM related concepts and having lots of fun doing it. This course is designed for Incoming 6th and 7th grade students.

We will meet on our Class TEAMS page Monday – Friday (An invite will be emailed to each student)

General Information/Getting Started: General information will be located on my Edlio and Teams page. Edlio is found under the RIS website. Teams can be accessed via the student portal, but I highly suggest you download Teams directly onto your computer and onto your smart phone if you have one. While Edlio will have the general class syllabus, Teams will be used for daily contact with the students. My class will be conducted through Teams Video. This means that the student must already have Teams and know how to join a meeting before our first day. One-on-one questions can be asked using Teams Chat. Information on these two functions are listed under “helpful links” below.

While all the Virtual Engineering programs will be Web Based, and no Downloading will be required, there will still be a need to Sign up and make an account for each. I will personally guide them through this process for each program and instructional videos will be posted to our Teams page as well. Some parental guidance may be required if your student gets stuck. A Google Chrome account will be helpful for the “Sketchup for Schools” program.

Intro to STEM: Virtual Robotics, Coding, Gaming, and 3D Design

  • VIRTUAL ROBOTICS AND CODING: This is an Introductory STEM class that immerses students in a variety of coding applications that include VEXcode, Code Combat, Make Code, Scratch, and Khan Academy Computer programming. VEXcode provides opportunities for students to participate in learning the code that makes Vex robots' work. VEXcode makes computer science come to life through collaborations and engaging experiences. The other Coding platforms allow Students to type real Python and JavaScript while building games that encourage trial-and-error, critical thinking, and creativity. Students then apply the coding skills they’ve learned by developing their own games and websites in project-based courses.
  • STEM: GAMING AND 3D DESIGN: This Introductory STEM class will build student’s skills in Gaming by using the program “Game Salad” while testing their design capabilities with 3D modeling programs like Tinker Cad and Onshape. Game Salad is a revolutionary game development platform that allows coders to create the game of their dreams with a sophisticated visual programming interface. It is an amazing way to introduce programming concepts, game design, and digital media creation to all students. The second part of the class involves the use of TinkerCad, Sketchup for Schools and a powerful Computer-Aided Design (CAD), a web-based program called Onshape to create 3D Models.
