Description
The 6th grade Social Studies curriculum is so fascinating! We will look at the earliest evidence of human societies. A long time ago humans stopped being nomadic and settled around rivers where they put down roots and began to develop systems for their cultures. We will look at several of these early cultures from the Stone Age, to Mesopotamia, Ancient Egypt, the Ancient Kush, India, China, the Hebrews, the Ancient Greeks and the Ancient Romans. We will look for patterns too for how humans adapted to their environment. It will be fun to explore the similarities and differences of these cultures' systems. We will look closely at the geography and the topography that affected how these cultures developed. Many world religions came to life during ancient times and we will gain a deeper understanding for some of the different faiths that are still practiced in the world today! Let's discover, or rediscover, these ancient civilizations together!

We are going to the Getty Villa! How exciting! Here is more information about this awesome educational opportunity! My 6th Period will get to go first, on March 1st. The other classes are going on the 8th or the 28th. Stay tuned.

Dear Teacher,

Thank you for booking a Tuesday visit to the Getty Villa.  As you may know, the Museum is closed to the public on Tuesdays.  Schools that visit for Guided Lessons on that day will be able to enjoy quiet galleries without crowds.  When you arrive, your class will be divided into smaller groups of 10-15 students, and each will be led by a docent guide and accompanied by a security guard so that they can access the galleries.

Please be aware that there are a few differences between coming on a Tuesday and on other days of the week when we are open to the general public:
  • After your guided tour, you will be able to tour the gardens at your leisure, however, there is no self-guide exploration of the museum galleries..
  •  The Café, Family Room, Museum Shop and Coffee Carts will be closed.
  • All school groups will need to depart no later than 1:00 p.m.
  • Beginning January 2017, the Villa will begin extensive renovations, with temporary gallery closures as well as restricted access to the Outer Peristyle.
Please let us know if you have any questions by emailing [email protected], or calling our School Group Schedulers at 310-440-7322.

Regards,
Getty School Groups Team

Dear 1st, 2nd, and 6th period:

Mrs. Kraake just let me know last week that she is counting on me this time to provide the parent chaperones. I apologize for the last minute request but I've been having trouble getting enough parents to volunteer. We really need another 2 or 3 chaperones for this Wednesday's field trip.

Please email me if your parent can attend the field trip on Wednesday with us. It is an extremely enjoyable day and I do hope a few parents will contact me. Student safety is paramount to us and the Getty requires a certain adult to student ratio as well.

So as soon as you read this, PLEASE go ask your parent to read this and to consider attending with us! You can email me at [email protected] as soon as a parent can agree to volunteer.

Thanks so much and I look forward to our Getty Villa learning experience.

Sincerely,

Ms. Weiss

Assignment

Don't be overwhelmed by this document! It's really long and includes lots of questions that are in the style of the new Common Core Assessments they are using at the end of the year to chart student progress. I will probably pick one of the first two examples of short answer questions for our Mesopotamia Test coming up on Thursday October 27. You have the questions ahead of time so you can look them over and start thinking about how you would answer these questions. Again, I'll choose from the Flooding Question (the first one) or the Code of Hammurabi (the second one). I may also give you a choice of either one to answer.

For these types of questions, the goal is to support your answer with textual support, or evidence (often quotes) from the texts that are selected for you to read. Your answer will include language like:

I'm convinced of this because in the second paragraph it says, "Direct Quote here..."

Assignment

Sorry for the confusion on Chapter 3 vocabulary. I do not want a DDC (I may have told one class we were going to do one so if you already did a DDC for Chapter 3 then I will accept that instead of Flashcards - no worries!)

This time, yup, you guessed it! I want flashcards! You can do them in quizlet app on your phone or another app for flashcards on your phone. They just need the word on one side and the definition on the other for ALL WORDS TO KNOW (there are 28 total!) on page 55 in the Ancient Civilizations textbook! This is not due until a week from this coming Wednesday. There will be plenty of time to get this done in class - not to worry! Just be good task masters!

Again, if you already did a DDC, you do NOT have to do flashcards too!

-Ms. Weiss

6 Students from each class volunteered to debate tomorrow. It is just a learner round so don't worry about it. We are all just learning what each speech should contain! For those of you who would like to look over the different speaker roles to see what each speech is supposed to accomplish in this style of Parliamentary debate, I've attached the document here. Thanks to our volunteers. Everyone will be "flowing" the round, listing the arguments that the speakers bring forth. I'm so excited to share my love for this activity with you. We can have mock debates throughout the year on different topics, both fun and serious.

If you want to look over the magazine article, it's at Upfront Magazine Login as a student with upfrontmag506 password! It's the last article...on plastic bags...

Assignment

Dear Students,

When I turned 13 years old, my family held my Bat Mitzvah at Windows on the World Restaurant in the World Trade Center, at the top of one of the towers that was destroyed in the 9-11 attack in New York City.

This attack on 9/11/01 is an important and pivotal event in the history of the United States of America. I'm attaching a very moving slideshow montage that I'd like you to watch and respond to in your journals. The slideshow focuses on the destruction in New York City but it is worth noting that the attack happened in Washington D.C., at the Pentagon, and in Pennsylvania also.

You may want to do a little research about what happened to understand the slideshow. The title in your notebooks should be JE: The Attack of September 11, 2001.

-Ms. Weiss

Due:

Assignment

I'm attaching the instructions for how to do the DDC Vocabulary assignments and a blank template. The words that are due Friday can be found in Ancient Civilizations, on page 5. There are 15 words total. Don't forget the two at the bottom.

Due:

Assignment

Cultural Collage Flags! We will work to make these look great! There will be time in class but I'd like you thinking about the flags at home and you'll need to print out symbols at home.

Due:

Assignment

Students will take notes in class this week. The file they will be taking notes from is uploaded here. This does not mean that students should not be actively taking notes in class when requested to. I provide these notes for students in case they missed anything or they are absent. Students should write as neatly as possible in their notebooks. Students who take good notes will retain the information better.

*Students who struggle with hand-writing or fine-motor issues will work with me to find an acceptable amount of hand-written notes. The remainder of the notes may be printed from the attachment. We will work together to improve the skill but I want these notes available for them to use.

Due:

Assignment

These instructions are some tips for having great notes in your notebooks. This format will help you all year to find your notes and your assignments quickly. Students who get in the habit of taking notes this way right from the start are more likely to get credit for their work because it will all be easy to find.

Hint: EVERYTHING is in chronological order. In other words, everything you do will go in order of when we do it. If you don't finish something, and you need extra time, but we have moved on to something else, then try to leave a little room to finish up.

Due:
