Course Description

LANGUAGE ARTS 6/2017.18

In accordance with the California Language Arts Content Standards, this course covers standards-based instruction in vocabulary development, reading comprehension, and written literary response and analysis. Students study reading through culturally and historically significant literary works and a variety of high-interest informational pieces directly related to the literary selections.

The PVPUSD Intermediate schools have adopted a new textbook series called StudySync. Students will be using this web-based textbook to learn about language arts in LA6. Core reading novels for LA6 include Hatchet, Freedom Walkers and another optional novel selected by Mr. White if time permits. More information to follow about access, teacher posting of assignments, and other important classroom procedures!

Read the entire syllabus and sign/print the last page only. Please bring to class by Friday, September 1st!

HW and tips for writing your claim!

Hey students! Reminders for your homework tonight:

- Write you revised thesis statement on pg. 5 of your writing packet. As you write, consider the following:
  •  use descriptive adjectives! See the post below for our list from class today.
  • choose three different traits (ex: endurance, perseverance, and determination are too similar)
  • use parallel structure as discussed in class: Ex: fearlessness, leadership, advocacy not  fearlessness, leader, advocate.
  • experiment with different sentence structures:
    • Ex: Jo Ann Robinson is the most heroic person in Freedom Walkers due to her....
    • With his trait, trait, and trait, E.D. Nixon is undoubtedly the most heroic person in Freedom Walkers
    • I strongly believe that because of her trait, trait, and trait, Rosa Parks displayed the essence of a hero in Freedom Walkers.
  • experiment with different ways to assert your claim --> see next post for a list!
Be prepared to share your claim in class tomorrow. Remember- this is the most important sentence of your whole paper... make it a good one! :)

Homework update 4/24

Hey there!
Reminder for homework tonight...
1. Finish WW #3: Exploring "Hero" entry. In your entry, write one quote that impacted you, and explain in one or two sentences why it is important. The links to the two articles are below.

2. Finish pg. 3 "Pre-write and Think" in writing packet. Remember... the more thoughtful you are now in your thinking and responses, the better and easier your paper will be later!

HW for tonight...

Hey there LA6! Make sure you have pg. 2 "Heroes" completed in your new argumentative writing packet.

If you weren't in class today, no stress :) We will get you a packet tomorrow!

Stay tuned for HW updates throughout the week as we start our writing workshops!

Here is the homework for this week, 4/16-4/20 :)
*Freedom Walkers packet due this Friday. If you have any pages missing stamps from pg. 22 forward, Friday is your last chance to turn them in for partial credit. Remember, the quality of your responses will be graded later even if you already received a stamp for completion!
What kind of ACE responses should I have in my Freedom Walkers packet?
Use this example for #1 on pg. 26 as a model. Remember: Answer, cite, explain!

Hey there students! As discussed in class today, this is what's due on Friday:

- Ch. 5 & 6 vocab flashcards (12 words) (there will be no vocab quiz on this day).

- Packet pgs. 22, 23, & 25 (don't worry about pg. 24 in packet- we will have a class discussion about that page)

- AR quiz

Let me know if you have any questions! Remember, for your written test tomorrow, it would be a good idea to have vocab flash cards for ch. 5 & 6 completed :)

- Mrs. Molyneux

Hey students! Here is the model for ACE responses in your Freedom Walkers packet. (Do not copy this response word for word in your packets. Use your own evidence and thoughts in your response!)

Remember: Employ strong, engaging verbs, adjectives, and pronouns. (avoid words like: got, get, said, a lot, cool, bad, mad, sad, it, them, they). Be specific and precise!
